He approached the leper who others judged as unapproachable.
He touched the untouchables who by law could make Him unclean.
He held accountable the Pharisees who were entitled and unaccountable.
I often work with people who are intimidated by someone that they perceive as more beautiful, more powerful, better connected, or prestigious. Sadly, sometimes the spouse they drag into counseling with them agrees with their internal, unspoken message, “You are less than”.
Feeling diminished, they then shrink inside and bow to the “power” that they have ascribed to that person. When this happens, they silence their voice, discount their own contributions, and question their self-worth. As a counselor, my opportunity is to offer an alternative: to see themselves as Christ does. I come alongside as they learn to hold their head high; exchanging their old identity for the one that Christ offers to all of His children.
Please pray with me:
Heavenly Father, we acknowledge our tendency to compare ourselves with others, and to make faulty conclusions about our self-worth. Thank you for humbly identifying with our humanity, so that we can exchange our old identity of self-doubt and insecurity for our new identity as your significant child. Help us to internalize the truth that nothing can separate us from Your Love. Jesus, thank you for teaching us how to incarnate Your impartiality into our lives with great compassion and humility. Amen!
Until next time, Blessings! ~ Deb
