Are you willing to be a comforter?
Submitted by kristen@newmome... on Fri, 11/11/2011 - 05:2"Happy are those who are strong in the Lord, who want above all else to follow your steps. When they walk through the Valley of Weeping, it will become a place of springs where pools of blessing and refreshment collect after rains!" - (Psalms 84:5, 6)
I have a mentor who once told me;
'The more you are willing to sacrifice the greater will be your ability to help others'.
His words have stayed with me over the years. My life story is different from yours, but like you my eyes fill with tears when in sorrow. It is painful to follow God’s leading when His road takes me away from what I want to hold on to. What I have discovered when I am willing to follow Him to the Valley of Weeping is that this is a place where I store up blessings promised to those who mourn.
Many times I fight God every step leading to this Valley. It is like being in an ‘intensive care unit’. Each time my wounds bring me here, I hurt. And every time my response is to resist. Even though I know through past experience that it is in this place that I am taught the divine art of comfort, initially I struggle. The training is extremely costly. For here there is no anesthetic and I feel the pain of the wounds that the Great Physician binds. But as I remain bound to Him, I see the heart of someone yet unknown eagerly looking into my eyes for hope, and I surrender to His comfort.
You may be wondering why you are experiencing some great sorrow. Your hope has been chased away by the shadow of despair in your soul. Hold on to Him even though you don’t understand. If you are willing, He will take this place of tears and transform it into a treasure of blessing and refreshment for others sent your way. You will develop a depth of soul that yields a great harvest of comfort.
Lord God, today I am reminded that you comfort me not just so that I am comfortable, but to make me a comforter. 'What a wonderful God we have…the source of every mercy, and the one who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens us in our hardships and trials. And why does He do this? So that when others are troubled, needing our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them this same help and comfort God has given us.' - (2 Corinthians 1:3,4)
May I become a rich storehouse of Your Comfort in Christ Jesus. Amen.
